Policies
School Hats and Sun Protection
As part of our sun smart policy children are required to wear a hat.
Schools hats which adequately protect all areas of the head are
available for purchase from the uniform shop. We suggest applying
sunscreen to your child before school and students have a drink
container filled with cold water for each day.
School Uniform
Glenbrook Public School has a uniform policy which was formulated in
consultation with the P&C Association. As a result of this
consultation, there is a strong across-the-board support for the
wearing of the school uniform. We believe it encourages the students to
feel part of the community. The uniform design allows students to be a
s comfortable as possible to enable them to participate fully in the
schools many daily activities.

of the garments.
Homework
Homework is given as a revision tool. Your child’s teacher will inform
you of his/her homework expectations. The underlying aim of homework
given is to enable students to assimilate and consolidate work given at
school. This may involve finishing work which they were unable to
finish during school hours. Homework is strongly encouraged as we
believe that it provides our students, especially senior students with
appropriate self management skills and study habits and it also creates
a strong/home school partnership.
Absences
If your child is absent form school, please send a note with them when
they return. If it is a prolonged absence let us know as soon as
possible. A Home/School Liaison Officer visits our school on a regular
basis to check rolls for any high absentee rates. If this consultation.
occurs without a reasonable explanation then the officer visits the
home for further
Discipline Programs
Glenbrook Public School welfare and discipline policy (incorporating
the Core Rules for Students in NSW Government Schools) aims to provide
a safe, secure environment in which the students will achieve success
in learning and develop self-confidence and positive relationships with
others.
To instil these values in our students we provide:
* A positive learning environment
* Appropriate teaching methods
* Caring and consistent staff
* Effective use of positive reinforcement
* Liaison with parents
* Clearly defined values and school rules
There is strong support from parents and staff at Glenbrook Public
School for the wearing of the school uniform. We believe it helps to
promote school pride and encourages the students to feel part of a
cohesive and supportive community.

Useful Information
Travelling to and from school
Glenbrook Public School students are expected to maintain our high
standards of conduct when in public travelling to or from school.
Students should travel to and from school using common sense and
observing the correct road rules whether riding a bike, catching a bus
or walking.
School Buses
If you reside 1.6km away from school your child may be eligible for a
Bus Pass. Application forms are available at the office, please return
them to the office when completed. In due course you will be issued
with a Bus Pass which allows your child to travel free of charge. All
infants students are entitled to free travel regardless of the distance
they reside from the school. However, we only encourage students who
are going to use the service on a regular basis to obtain a bus pass.
Bike Riders
You can assist greatly by ensuring that your child follows the correct
rules for bike riding. An area has been set aside for bikes to be
secured in the Primary. Although road safety is discussed and taught at
school, we would appreciate it if parents could also encourage bike
safety between home and school. K-2 children are not permitted to
ride bicycles to school.
Supervision
Children are not supervised before 8.40am and after 3.10pm. Should you
wish to take your child early from class you must obtain a Release Slip
from the office first. Parents are also requested for
written permission to the office or class teacher if another parent or
carer is taking your child home. The class teacher must be notified of
any change in the collecting routine.
Religious Instruction
Scripture lessons are conducted each Friday morning by instructors
approved by the Ministers’ Association. Where a religious application
is recorded on a child’s Enrolment Form, which is catered for by the
instructors provided by the Ministers’ Assoc. that child will be
expected to attend Scripture lessons. Should exclusion be required,
parents are to make that request in writing.
Excursions
Students from time to time go on excursions away from the school to
visit places of educational interest. Excursions and camps are selected
for their educational benefit and are part of our school’s program.
Students travel by bus or train and are well supervised by teachers.
Parents are informed in writing of all excursions, performances and
special events, permission notes are mandatory for attendance. We
encourage all students to attend these outings, parents may be asked to
attend as a helper.
Notes
During any term a number of notes outlining special school activities
may go home with your child. These notes will provide details of the
activity with dates and times. Notes for special events and excursions
will require your consent. This is the most important so your child can
participate in the activity. Most notes (eg newsletter) are sent home
with the youngest in the family, otherwise notes are sent home with the
relevant student.
Student Council
The student council is a body within the school that represents
students and promotes their views and participation in school decision
making. It aims to promote leadership and communication skills allowing
students to experience democratic processes and effective problem
solving skills.
Late Arrivals
Students arriving late are to report to the front office with their
parents to obtain a late pass. Parents are to notify the office why the
children are late. This is recorded on the late slip that is given to
the class teacher. Young children should then be taken to the classroom
by their parent. In the event that the class is not in their room, the
parent is then able to help them find their class.
Absences
If your child is absent form school, please send a note with them when
they return. If it is a prolonged absence let us know as soon as
possible. A Home/School Liaison Officer visits our school on a
regular basis to check rolls for any high absentee rates. If this
occurs without a reasonable explanation then the officer visits the
home for further consultation.
Money
All money sent in should be in a sealed envelope marked with name,
class, what it is for and amount enclosed. Permission notes must also
be included in the envelope. All money should be brought to the office
at the Primary and deposited in our letterbox, money can be handed to
the teachers in the Infants Dept. The school has EFTPOS facilities for
your convenience.
Transfer and Enrolment of Students
Students transferring to another school in NSW need to obtain a
Transfer Certificate from the office. This certificate then needs to be
presented to the school where you will be enrolling your child.
Medication
We understand that there is a need for some students to receive
medication while at school. For our Administration Staff to give
medication to a student a signed permission slip is required which
clearly states the required dosage and time. Students are to come to
the office at the required time for medication. No medication is to be
left in the child’s school bag for obvious safety reasons. No
medication will be given to a student without written permission from a
parent/caregiver. The school is not permitted to give aspirin or
disprin unless specifically prescribed by a doctor. If your child is to
receive medication on a regular basis at school, please obtain medical
consent forms from the office. No medication will be given without
proper authority.
Interview with Staff
Glenbrook Public School encourages regular contact between parents and
teachers. Of course, there are times during the day when teachers are
unable to talk with parents because they are teaching or have other
school commitments. Therefore, it is advisable to phone the
school and arrange a convenient time if an extended interview is
required. The school has an “open door” policy and encourages parent
participation and involvement in all aspects of school.
Accident and Illness
In the event of an accident or illness it is essential that you can be
contacted. For this reason we have emergency/medical information cards
that we ask you to complete. The school should be notified immediately
of any changes in contact details. If we are unable to contact you and
your child requires urgent medical attention the school’s policy is to
transport him/her by ambulance to the nearest hospital.
Fundraising
Glenbrook Public School fundraising initiatives are coordinated in
conjunction with the staff and the Parents and Citizens Association.
All money raised assists the school in purchasing resources for
students to use, as well as special purpose areas that teachers and
parents have identified.
Voluntary Contribution
To assist with purchasing resource requirements for students, the
school asks for a voluntary contribution to be paid by
parents/caregivers on an annual basis. This can be paid as a lump sum
or by instalments.
School Canteen
Glenbrook Public School Canteen is currently open on Mondays,
Wednesdays and Fridays and provides a wide range of nutritious lunches
at reasonable prices and is part of the government schools healthy food
canteen policy. The canteen opens at 9.00am and orders need to be
placed before 9.10am. Students are to place their orders in the lunch
order box in both the Infants and Primary offices. Orders must be in
writing on a paper bag with the correct change if possible and students
name and class clearly marked. Infants students are unable to purchase
food at recess, but can place an order for snacks with their lunch
order. Ice blocks are sold to Infants students by Year 2 at lunchtime.
The operating of the canteen is purely by volunteers and we are always
in need of helpers. The number of days the canteen is open is dependent
upon the amount of support provided by it’s volunteers.
School Counsellor
Glenbrook Public School has access to the services of a school
counsellor for one day a week. The school counsellor is part of the
school’s welfare team and is able to provide information, understanding
and advice on the learning and behaviour of students, especially those
with special needs. The counsellor may assist teachers and parents in
dealing with these needs. If you wish to speak to the counsellor about
your child, you may do so by arranging an appointment through the
office.
Lost Property
It is extremely important for all school wear to be clearly labelled
with your child’s name, especially on jumpers, jackets and hats. This
allows us to return lost property to it’s rightful owner. Both the
Infants and Primary departments have a section for lost property. Each
term unclaimed items are considered for the uniform pool or sent to a
charity organisation.
We ask that items of value be left at home as these items are the
students own responsibility. We also suggest the kind of jewellery your
child wears to school. While watches for older students are useful,
earrings can be dangerous are should be left at home
Emergency Procedures
In the case of an emergency the school has an Emergency
Evacuation Plan. In case of a serious bushfire children will remain at
school as we deem the school to be as safe as any other area.
Custody of Children
Advice of Custody Arrangements: The policy of the Department of
Education & Training requires that copies of court orders need to
be sighted by school authorities when custody of children is disputed.
The school also needs to be notified in writing whenever special
arrangements are entered into. A request in writing needs to be
submitted for arrangements of separate interviews for parents and
copies of reports.
School Reports and Assessment
School reports provide important feedback on the progress of your child
and provide students and parents with feedback on how much students
have achieved throughout the year. Reports are sent home at the end of
Term 2 and Term 4. We encourage parents to discuss their child’s report
with their child, focusing on the positive aspects.
Parents and Citizens Association
Parents are encouraged to be part of the school P&C Association.
Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each month commencing at
7.30pm. Meetings are currently held in the Primary staffroom. The
meetings provide parents with input into the school, with opportunities
to discuss items, as well as knowledge of school events.
